Baby Skin Care

Once the umbilical cord has fallen off and the stump is dry, a full tub bath may be given. Daily baths are not necessary and may lead to dry skin. Non-perfumed moisturizer is suggested for dry skin. Wash the diaper area with a mild soap and water with each diaper change. (continuous use of diaper wipes is discouraged as this may cause irritation of sensitive infant skin).

The face should be washed daily using a soft terry cloth and water in a circular motion. This may prevent heat rash on the face.

If the scalp becomes crusty and scaly, rub a small amount of baby oil into the scalp one-half hour before shampooing. After shampooing, gently remove the scales with a soft brush. If this condition persists, contact your pediatrician.
